❝To have another language is to possess a second soul.❞

The ESL program at Bryan School is a program especially designed for each student. Students can improve their English skills in a small group setting. Students will have more opportunity to speak and participate in discussions in this small group setting. They will receive more individual attention. Instruction is given at a slightly slower pace so that children will understand what is being said more easily. Instruction is given completely in English.
Many children in ESL this year are receiving the same reading lessons as their classmates, but again, they are given more opportunities to read aloud and practice their skills. Understanding of the story is checked immediately, additional vocabulary is presented and reviewed.
Third, Fourth and Fifth graders will receive extra help as they prepare to take the NJSLA test in April. All students will be tested in March with the ACCESS for ELLs test to determine their proficiency level in English.
Students are initially screened in September or when they arrive in the US. Exiting the ESL program is based on multiple criteria including their performance in the main classroom as well as ESL, feedback from teachers, ACCESS for ELLs test results, and PARCC results.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child, please feel free to call the main office and make an appointment to see me. I will be happy to talk with you.
